I read excerpts from Agnes Repplier's writings in high school and remember really enjoying them, hence why I chose to read this collection of essays. Though mildly enjoyable, I found the essays rather staid and unexciting - no response to Repplier's ideas was sparked in my brain, nothing was made clearer or more interesting by reading her work, except the fact that I really wish I could have a.
Eva Louise Repplier; Theresa Margaret Repplier; Agnes Repplier. AGNES REPPLIER. Agnes Repplier (1855-1950), was an essayist and biographer who was admired for her common sense, courage, and sense of artistry in crafting an essay. Independent-minded, well-read, and with a incisive sense of humor, she had a writing career that spanned sixty-five.
Repplier convinced Houghton, Mifflin to publish a collection of seven of her early essays in her first book, Books and Men (1888). As Geore Stewart Stokes puts it in his 1949 biography, Agnes Repplier: Lady Of Letters (available on the Internet Archive ), “she had become convinced that a book is a necessary form of advertisement for a periodical writer.”.

A forgotten essayist, perhaps a forgotten medium of communication, and as much as I have been pondering whether I believe that she belongs in a special place in arts and letters, I have been pondering exactly why essays have gone the way of all flesh. The cynical side of me, sadly growing larger every single day I fear, suggests that modern attention spans cannot deal with such things as.Learn More

By Agnes Repplier. Read FREE! Excerpt. We are rising dizzily and fearlessly on the crest of a great wave of sentiment. When the wave breaks, we may find ourselves submerged, and in danger of drowning; but for the present we are full of hope and high resolve. Forty years ago we stood in shallow water, and mocked at the mid- Victorian sentiment, then ebbing slowly with the tide. We have nothing.Learn More
